Love You’re Due

A little life leaves your body

A little love leaves your heart

And it cuts blunt and bloody

Not with the ease of something sharp.

A little life leaves your soul

A lot of life’s colours fade away

As the one that sparks your soul

Brings their colours another’s way.

We can fall in love

I’m not sure we can control who with

Sometimes another’s presence makes you feel whole

And that is one of life’s great gifts.

But that doesn’t mean they feel the same

That is not something you can control

And you can get lost in all that pain

As love takes on another role.

That pain can eat you whole

That pain can run you through

As the beauty you see in them

Is now for them in a love they are due.

We can hold resentments

But resentments hold you too

And I’d rather let love conquer those resentments

It’s been the overriding feeling that has seen me through.

You can give your love out

And it may not come back

But don’t let it extinguish your love

That defeats the point of the act.

You can put your heart out for the taking

And it can recede when it’s aching in you

But sometimes we can find in our heart’s breaking

There’s something waking in it too.

We can’t see all the cards

Or know if others have played with the deck

We can only play our hearts

And that’s the only game to respect.

We don’t always do ourselves justice

When we’re suffering and our world’s falling apart

But your heart is calling you to trust it

Even when those feelings are hitting it hard.

We don’t always get our closure

In ways we want or that feel kind to our hearts

But we gain something in our hearts’ exposure

When we drop our futile guards.

We can have regrets

But we can only ever be where we are at too

Our heart can have so many tests

And sometimes life beats it back in you.

But if it’s beating still

Then you let those feelings beat for you

They are telling you love lives still

And you need to give a little more of it to you.

With great loss, there comes great pain

And that can put great weight and chains on you

But beneath it you keep lighting the flame

And claim the life and love you are due.

Things don’t always come on time

Time can play exhausting games on you

But you just keep lighting the flame

And allow the flame, give life, to the love in you.
